Basic PPP configuration

PPP Configuration

Objectives

  • Cable the network
  • Assign IP addresses
  • Configure OSPF
  • Configure PPP
  • Configure CHAP and PAP authentication
  • Verify configuration

Topology

Configure PPP

This will need to be configured on all serial interfaces. When the encapsulation the link will go down until until the encapsulation is set on the other serial link. This is the final router that I configured.

R2(config)#interface Serial0/0/0
%LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial0/0/0, changed state to down

00:09:16: %OSPF-5-ADJCHG: Process 1, Nbr 192.168.1.1 on Serial0/0/0 from FULL to DOWN, Neighbor Down: Interface down or detached

%LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial0/0/0, changed state to up

R2(config)#interface Serial0/1/1
R2(config-if)#encapsulation ppp

%LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial0/1/1, changed state to down

00:09:24: %OSPF-5-ADJCHG: Process 1, Nbr 192.168.0.1 on Serial0/1/1 from FULL to DOWN, Neighbor Down: Interface down or detached

%LINEPROTO-5-UPDOWN: Line protocol on Interface Serial0/1/1, changed state to up

00:09:28: %OSPF-5-ADJCHG: Process 1, Nbr 192.168.1.1 on Serial0/0/0 from LOADING to FULL, Loading Done

00:09:36: %OSPF-5-ADJCHG: Process 1, Nbr 192.168.0.1 on Serial0/1/1 from LOADING to FULL, Loading Done

You can issue the commands; debug ppp negotiation and debug ppp packet to view the process further.

Configure CHAP and PAP authentication

When configuring the authentication the interfaces will drop until both sides of the serial links have been configured correctly.

R1

R1(config)#username R1 password cisco
R1(config)#int s0/0/0
R1(config-if)#ppp authentication pap
R1(config-if)#ppp pap sent-username R2 password cisco

R2

R2(config)#username R2 password cisco
R2(config)#int s0/0/0
R2(config-if)#ppp authentication pap
R2(config-if)#ppp pap sent-username R1 password cisco
R2(config-if)#

R2(config)#username R3 password cisco
R2(config)#int s0/1/1
R2(config-if)#ppp authentication chap

R3

R3(config)#username R2 password cisco
R3(config)#int s0/1/1
R3(config-if)#ppp authentication chap

Verify configuration

A ping from R3 to R1 should confirm that everything is working correctly. If you are having problems use the debug commands to troubleshoot further.
